The Rumtek monastery is one of the largest and it belongs to the Kargyu sect of Buddhists which originated in the 12th century in Tibet.

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Sikkim is the Rumtek monastery which is situated around 23 km away from Gangtok and is situated on the opposite hill. The monastery is a great piece of architectural excellence and one of the finest among other monasteries in India. Monastery A Treasure Of Art

The Rumtek Monastery is three storied and it houses some of the rarest religious artwork of the Buddhist which is of great historical significance around the world. There are many wall murals and Thankas. There are also 1001 miniature golden models of Buddha which are of great historical significance. The Rumtek monastery has a Golden Stupa which has been preserved for a long time and besides that, there are also various other sculptures which belong to the 16th Karmapa. It also serves as a reservoir of many unique Buddhist items beside it also some of the world’s most unique religious scriptures.

Also An Educational Centre

The monastery is also home to many monks of different ages who live here to study about the religion and the important values of Buddhist teachings. If you think that monks give up their social life and they have to attachment to anything else throughout their life you must know the religion better. Though monks are taught here to seclude themselves from worldly treasures or the materialistic attachments, they may also leave the Monastery after their education is complete and live their life on the principles of Buddhism but not necessarily as a monk but as a social creature.

  • The Monastery is open to all from 6 AM to 6 PM.
  • The monastery doesn’t allow photography in few of its areas due to security reasons and it is under strict security at all times.

History of the Rumtek Monastery

The monastery is said to have been built by the Gyalwa Karmapa in 1960’s. He was the 16th Karmapa of the monastery. Karmapa is generally referred to the head of the monastery who is also believed to be the chosen one. The Gyalwa Karmapa came here to Rumtek after the Chinese invaded Tibet. He sadly passed away in 1981 and after a long search of 10 years, a boy from Tibet, Ugen Thinley was identified by Dalai Lama as the next and the 17th Karmapa.

The Rumtek monastery is said to have possession of a hat which has a great history behind it. The legend says that the first Karmapa ended his long years of meditation in a cave and he was greeted by around 1000 fairies each of whom gave him a strand of hair which was woven together into a hat. It is said that the hat must either kept in a box or be held by hand as failing to do so may cause it to fly off.

The Losoong Festival

The Losoong festival is of great importance to the state of Sikkim and also marks the beginning of the Sikkimese New Year. The festival is celebrated all across Sikkim with joy and the festival also coincides with the ending of the harvest season which doubles the joy for farmers who have worked hard throughout the year. The festival generally falls on the 18th day of the 10th lunar month of the Tibetan Lunar calendar. It normally falls in December.

The Loosong is celebrated in Rumtek Monastery and the highlights of the festival are the masked dance performances or the Cham dance performed by the monks of the Rumtek. Other highlights of the festival are the cuisines and the archery competitions.

The colorful Rumtek during the festival and the colorful and vibrant attires moving to the rhythm of the electric folk music and the flying acrobats set such a beautiful scene which seems to be the prime reason for the increase in the number of locals as well as the tourists to Rumtek during the Loosong festival.
